The
Opening Doors Project is funded by the Commonwealth Sector Development Fund to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members get real choice and control around disability supports. For this to happen, there needs to be more culturally safe disability services. Nous Group and Lifestyle Solutions will work with support providers in the ACT to train workers and to build culturally safe disability services. The first phase of this program is to learn more about the extent and nature of the need for culturally safe disability services.
With the help of First People’s Disability Network, Nous and Lifestyle Solutions will be having yarn ups around the ACT throughout 2016. Details about times and locations of these activities will be posted on social media.
After learning about delivering culturally safe services from Indigenous community members and support service providers
in the ACT, Nous and Lifestyle Solutions will:
- Work with Aboriginal organisations to build their capacity to deliver disability services through the NDIS
- Work with mainstream organisations to build their capacity to deliver culturally sensitive services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Work to build the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce for the disability sector in the ACT
